I’m going to rant to you herein about the specifics of book editing.

After having your book written, you in every case most certainly need to get your book edited.

There are different kinds of book editor and it’s to your advantage to be cognizant of the differences between them.

Book editing is so correctly done by professional book editors.

There are book editors for publishers who are involved with publishing books as well as cover design and other specific aspects. Such editors essentially take care of the entire book production part. That is not the type of editor that you are looking for your book.

The breed of editor you want to have is one of two types a copy editor or a line editor; a line editor can be labeled as a copy editor due to the close similarity of their duties.

Copy editing and line editing can be, for all intents and purposes, simply be described as a word-for-word, line-by-line approach to polishing pieces. You can read more about the specific responsibilities of book editors at Copy Editing Job Description Book Editing Job Description

You may have to have a Developmental Editor, depending on how deep things need to go with your work. Developmental editors, also referred to as Substantive Editors, typically focus on the overall perspective of the work.

Their job is to identify problems of clarity and/or reorganizing the book to improve content flow, structure, understanding, etc..

Typically, on working online, you run into only one type of editor. And a common blunder is to think that you’re getting all that you need done for your manuscript, to the degree that is necessary, when you that is not the case at all. And that’s one of the biggest misconceptions that we can have as an aspiring author!

Though very important by itself, a copy editor/line editor only goes through what could be considered the superficial or high-level perspective of a manuscript, going after things, like spelling typos, poor grammar, punctuation errors and those kinds of things.

Therefore, only having this perspective done on your manuscript can be a disaster waiting to happen! What normally occurs is that huge, blundering typos are discovered after the book has been printed. Too little, too late, as they say. And oh how embarrassing!

As you can see, it is vitally important to have your manuscript edited correctly and appropriately. Your reputation and success demands this!

So it’s good to be aware that you need to have two editors actually work on your manuscript! And again, the two kinds of editors you need to have are: copy editors (who are also known as line editors) and developmental editors (also referred to as substantive editors).

Then you have either what’s called, a “light edit”, or ”heavy editing”.

A light edit is just like it sounds. There’s not a whole lot to do, there are no major changes, and so forth.

Heavy edits, on the other side of the coin, have to do with extensive work, and it takes a lot of time and expense. But obviously it is worth every cent.

With all the great deal of time you spent on writing your manuscript, you need to have it worked over by a new set of eyes. Your book needs to unquestionably relay your concepts the way it should.

There can be so much of a demand for “heavy” book editing that there can be the need to call upon a writer to rewrite some areas of the book. It may be required as well. And if that’s the case, do it. You cannot hold back on your book’s quality – ever!

So that’s it with regard to book editing. Beyond that, you are going to then require a professional book proofreader. We will go over that in another article.
