Parental Advice – Dealing With Teen Substance Abuse
Posted on November 23rd, 2011 No commentsOne of the most common problems that teens and young adults have to deal with is substance abuse. Most parents won’t believe that their teen could be dealing with this type of problem. Here are a few tips on dealing with teen substance abuse.
One of the easiest ways for teens to get started is to start taking prescription medications. You don’t want your teen to have access to any of these medications. If you use medications, keep them stored in a cabinet.
If you drink alcohol, then make sure that you lock it up. Drinking alcohol is likely an even bigger problem than drug abuse in any form. Missing bottles of alcohol are a common problem for parents. Prevent this from happening by locking it up in a liquor cabinet.
Your child may start drinking if their parents do. The problem gets even worse if there is an abusive or alcoholic parent in the home. Two of the resulting problems include substance abuse and divorce.
Parents are also advised to get to know their children’s friends. Peer pressure has lead many young teens down the wrong road. You don’t want your child being friends with people that will pressure him or her to make the wrong choices.
It’s important that parents always take the time to talk to their children. You should also talk to your child directly about substance abuse.
Depression is another problem that teens have to deal with. Depressed teens can easily turn to drugs or alcohol to mask their feelings. If you feel that your teen is depressed, then you need to do something about it before things get even worse.
Parents may also accidentally contribute to the depression. You and your spouse need to get help if you argue frequently. Nothing productive comes from frequent arguing.
You should know that there are various signs teens display when they abuse substances. Behaviorial changes such as becoming secretive are quite common. They’ll also do whatever they can to keep you out of their room.
It’s also common for their grooming habits to change noticeably. Your child may start wearing sunglasses inside because their eyes are red.
Parents who think their child may be affected by substance abuse problems should seek help as soon as possible. You may need to seek help from a counselor. Go to a marriage counselor if you and your spouse are having problems. Doc No. 34Sdlhgsdl -sds
